Inside the Bottle: There are few wines in the world that can transport you back to a place like those made near the Alps. In the glass, this wine brings you right to the hillside of the Apremont appellation. Mountain spring grasses, lemon thyme, sweet herbs, wild flowers, chamomile, preserved and meyer lemon, honeysuckle, flint and wet stone quickly find their way from the glass to your nose. Once in your mouth, the feeling of the most fresh spring water straight out of the mountain glides on your palate with gentle, but tense acidity. This cuvée, named after Jean-Claude's daughter, has a lot of energy and comes out swinging and never stops until the last drop is gone. It is far too good for its asking price.
Terroir: Apremont is an appellation that lies squarely on a limestone bedrock that was created in the 1100's when half of the limestone mountain, Mont Granier, came crashing down. What was left are many types of calcaire from hard limestones to chalky powder created its decomposition over nearly 1000 years. Facing mostly towards the east, this hill is one of the most green spots in all of France due to its proximity to the Alps and its soils are rich in decomposed organic matter, making it a challenge for organic viticulture due to the heavy humidity in the soils. The climate is “fresh”, as the French would say, which helps keep the tension in these wines.
