Domaine de la Ville Rouge

The Story

Sébastien Girard’s story is a classic of generational change, the kind that we love. The son of a grape farmer in Crozes-Hermitage, he went to school for enology so he could take the family estate to the next level. After selling all their grapes since Sébastien’s great grandfather purchased a few hectares in 1919, Sébastien and his father, Edgar, created the family’s first winemaking domaine.

Young and idealistic, Sébastien immediately converted all the vineyards to certified organic farming by 2009. (They’ve started with biodynamics, but only recently applied for the certification.) Through tasting many vintages prior to 2014, we could see what was happening. By 2015 a big corner was turned, and Sébastien hit his stride. The wines are pure, precise, and deliver a tremendous amount of pleasure, reverberating with the youthful energy of their maker.

Lay of the Land

We have three producers from Crozes-Hermitage and they are all located in different districts of the appellation. The vineyards of Ville Rouge are set on the three terraces of Le Chassis, an alluvial plain that composes the largest expanse of the appellation. Located south of the famous hill of Hermitage, it’s one of the most dynamic sections of the appellation and boasts full exposure to sun and wind, marking these richly textured Syrahs with power and intensity.

The three terraces work their way up from the Rhône, with sandy soils closest to the river. Next up is the largest portion of Les Chassis, with rounded river and glacial stones, red clay, gravel and sand. Further up on the highest terrace, the soils are a broad mixture of red and white clays and calcium-rich loess, an Alpine wind-blown crystalline fine-grained sediment. Each of these soil types contributes its own personality into the blend of each of wine.

The Wine

The Scoup:  This charming, medium-bodied Syrah comes from 15-year-old Crozes-Hermitage vines growing in a mixture of different terroirs south of the great hill of Hermitage.  Biodynamically farmed with maturation in old foudre and stainless steel tank helps preserve its freshness and on-demand quaffability.  Not meant for aging, it delivers its youthful energy from the first smell to the last sip.

L’Inspiration’s complexity results from a broad range of factors: its vineyard's all day exposure to the sun (the power); the gravel-rich clay soils (the depth) from the alluvial plain, Les Chassis, and the sandier soils (the elegance) closer to the Rhône River, known as Les Saviaux.  Pepper, allspice, dark red fruits and dry earth carry the nose, while fine acidity and soft tannins characterize a palate lush with fresh green herbs and lavender that linger for minutes after each taste.
