Font du Loup - 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc

Inside the bottle: Finding Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc that is worth a damn is not always an easy task. The very best white wines in the world are refreshingly balanced with charm, acidity and leave you ready for the next glass; this wine is one of those rare finds in Chateauneuf. It leads with Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, both textured whites that can find proper acidity and are refreshingly endowed with almond, flowers, soft green and yellow fruits, and baking spices, in the right viticultural hands. The remaining minorities, Clairette and Bourboulenc make up the difference, the former bringing the legs wide open appeal of the wine, while the latter tends to bring some tension and aroma to the blend alongside a slightly neutral effect (that’s why it is such a small part of the blend!) The resulting wine is surprisingly dynamic and represents the more well thought out side of Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc as a wine of serious pedigree and freshness rather than those on the heavier baroque side that would have been a suitable stand-in for Brunhilda’s 6th century prototype of Chanel No. 5.
