Inside the Bottle: Seguret captured my attention when I tasted it with one of our other producers, Domaine la Roubine. It had its own personality and unique aromas that more fresh, complex and lively compared to many of its sister appellations. Because we are limited to only 10 cases of Roubine’s Seguret each vintage, I went in search of a new producer and what I found in Jean David was a shockingly pleasant surprise.
Jean David proclaims that a great wine cannot be made from vines younger than 50 years of age. All of the vines younger than 50 years are bottled as Côtes du Rhône, while the rest, the older vines, are reserved for this wine.
First out of the gates are red flowers and garrigue, followed by strawberries, Thanksgiving cranberry, licorice, and middle eastern spices. The palate is bright with acidity and straight, but supple tannins. Black figs, plums, forest floor and cassis rest on the lingering and sweet finish. Like the Côtes du Rhône, this wine exceeds the expectation and price. It may be one of the most sophisticated and undervalued wines in our collection.
Terroir: The combination of sandy-loam and limestone soils gives this wine tremendous lift and great structure without gifting it too much in body. Sand always seems to impart high and spirited aromas in wine and its presence here is clear. The wine is made of the highly aromatic and structured grapes, Grenache (55%), Carignan (25%) and Counoise (20%). I believe that the latter two grapes are under appreciated and hope they will find a stronger presence in more serious wines within the Southern Rhône wine region.
All of Jean David’s wines are vinified and raised in concrete tanks with a miminum of Sulfur added. He has been organically farming since 1979.
