Leo Erazo’s Los Viñateros Bravos and his eponymous label wines come from the Guarilihue area of Chile’s Itata Valley, the first settlement of Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century who brought their own vines. Dominated by ancient pink/orange granite dating from the Cretaceous period and younger volcanic soils, the minimalist and naturalist, Leonardo Erazo, practices organic, biodynamic, and dry farming with the own-rooted, ancient 150-300-year-old País bush vines. All the wines are vinified with spontaneous fermentations in concrete (eggs, spheres, and more), amphoras, large wood vats and food-grade polymer containers, and they’re pressed in a vertical, wooden press.

VINEYARD DETAILS

Volcanico País comes from 1.5ha of 100% País with an average vine age of 200 years (2023) on a soft slope facing north at 200m on basalt (volcanic) bedrock with a 20-30 cm of basaltic sand and rock topsoil.

CELLAR NOTES

Destemmed natural ferment for 3 weeks with 1-2 daily punch downs at 25°C max. Aged 12 months in 30hl cement vat. Sulfites added only at bottling. No fining or filtration.

About The Wine

One would be more hard-pressed to find a more authentic wine in the world than Leonardo Erazos’ Pais wines from Chile’s Itata Valley.  Yes, I know that’s a massive statement, but consider this very unusual set of circumstances that make it a pretty darn good argument:

1) There’s no phylloxera in Chile—making it the only major wine producing country with that advantage for authenticity that come from not needing American rootstock.

2) These are own-rooted vines planted no earlier than 150-years-ago, and Leonardo said they could be as old as 300.

3) Pais is an ancient grape variety brought to Chile when the conquistadors settled there in the late 16th century.  There are no laboratory clones, just a vine variety that has adapted to its environment for more than 400 years.

4) There is little to no disease pressure in these vineyards, so the use of vineyard treatments and sprays are rare, and in some cases, not used for an entire year, or more.

5) These grapes come from families who have farmed them naturally the same way for centuries and Leo doesn’t tell them how to farm them, because they know what they are doing!

6) Leo does as little as possible to these perfect grapes and adds a minimal amount of sulfur to keep them healthy, and worth drinking!

7) The vines come from purely granite soils that are about 320 million years ago, no amendments, no fertilizers!

8) The vines are dry-farmed!!

9) It’s beautifully crafted and delicious too!

Leo’s Granitico Pais is made the same as this wine but tastes a little different.  This version grown on pure basalt (volcanic soil) is slightly more elegant and fine than the Granitico.  The aromas of cinder and ash one usually expects from volcanic wines the world over are folded into an array of soft red and orange fruits.  Both wines carry the aroma of “Chilean garrigue” which comes from the forest influence that surrounds all the vineyards.  Leo’s wines are as elegant as any red wine in the world and loaded with terrific imprint of their soils and surrounding flora.
