It’s week two of our ten weeks in Europe visiting our producers and things are going well. Today we sampled the very promising 2016s from the Côte d’Or with Maxime Cheurlin, Amélie Berthaut and Bruno Clair.
Bruno Clair is letting more and more whole cluster sneak into his wines these days. Every 2016 we tasted was singing from the first barrel to the last. No surprise!
Maxime (from Domaine Georges Noellat) is speaking more English these days and also broadening his range of wines. When you taste in his cellar, you think, “yeah, yeah, yeah, do we have to taste one more unapologetically delicious wine before lunch?”
My old boss, Adam Tolmach, used to say that winemaking is 90% logistics. With Amélie’s new underground winery finished and her fiancée, Nicolas Faure, managing her vineyard team, everything is beginning to fire on all cylinders. Her 2016s were yet another jump from the previous year.
Now it’s back to the Côte de Beaune to taste with Simon Bize, David Croix and Olivier Lamy.
