The Source Tour Spring 2018: Côte d’Or Part One

March 20, 2018

After a great first week in France, we continue with another solid day in Burgundy. Anne Morey (of Pierre Morey) gave us a preview of the 2017 vintage. According to her father, the legendary Pierre, it could be one of the best white vintages of his lifetime. That sounds good to me! Plus, it was my first time setting foot in her Volnay Santenots plot.

My visit with Caroline Lestimé at Jean-Nöel Gagnard included a refresher course on Chassagne-Montrachet terroirs with a tasting of the 2016s—a good vintage, though with minuscule quantities thanks to Jack Frost.

Our last visit was in Santenay with David Moreau and his 2016s, along with a blind tasting of five different closures on some of his grandfather’s 2009 vintage—that was a trip!

Coravin’d wine

It was also a good reminder to store your coravin’d wines on their side! David mentioned to us that he’s had a lot of dried out wines if they are kept upright after the coravin. That tiny little hole created by the needle makes way for oxidation if the cork isn’t touching wine. Yes, it might leak but it should keep better, and these were the proof.

Dinner with the Wasserman family was a fitting end. I had snails for the first time tonight since I got slightly ill from them about 10 years ago, and I ate strawberries, which I usually have an allergic reaction to. Today, I progressed unscathed.

Up next, the 2016s from the Côte d’Or with Maxime Cheurlin, Amélie Berthaut and Bruno Clair…
